Engine Numbers

Looking for assistance:
I have just bought a Triumph 1970 Bonneville which has an engine and frame number of: GD 53136 T120R
Can anyone explain to me why the number starts with a GD whereas all reference to engine numbers I have seen in the past have started with DU?

Much obliged

Starting with the Unit construction engines in 1963, Triumph used the prefix DU for all it's 650cc engines. halfway thru 1969 Triumph change over to a different system of numbering the month and year using different prefix's.

The "D" stands for 1970 and the "G" refers to the month of June.

Here is a good link to explain the numbers.

Paul, this might be a good link to post as a sticky above.
