76 T140V Clutch problems

My clutch is such that I need to be superman to depress the lever in order for it to engage I attempted to adjust as per the haynes manual and the adj screw seems not to do anything my next is remove the clutch plates and clean them but what puzzles me is that it works fine except for the superhman strength required to pull the lever?? Anyone can shed light on this??

Thanks

Are there any sharp(-ish) bends in the cable?
Does the clutch break fee easily and otherwise work well (besides the heavy action)?

I would suggest the 3 clutch springs in the pressure plate are done up too tight, probably to stop the clutch from slipping.

Take the clutch apart, renew the bonded plates if necessary (depth of material left on them), get the plain plates garnet blasted, replace the 3 clutch springs, and put it back together. Don't do the 3 springs up too tight, but tight enough to stop slippage at max power - I usually have 2.5 spring coils showing above the edge of the cup the springs sit in. Check length of operating rod. Adjust clutch operating mechanism, loosen evry adjustment off, start at adjustment screw/nut in the pressure plate, then to cable adjustment at gearbox outer cover, then at the hand-lever. Lubricate cable (if non-nylon).

Ditto that.
Experienced the very same.

Check clutch cable is well oiled and easy to move, are there any wire strands starting to unravel and bind on the outer cable?

Check the clutch push rod, sometimes these can start to bind, remove, check for rust or a build up of muck, etc and clean re-oil.

Sometimes you can get a build up of muck in the clutch spring holder housing, check there also.

Hope this helps.

Thanks

I disassembled the clutch and the springs sure enough were super tight so I ordered the shop manual and will redo the plates I am wondering what are the tolerance levels for them and if they were too oiled? they were rather mucked in oil.
