T100R generator

If my battery is bad shouldn't my generator put out enough voltage to keep the bike running at idle with the head light on if I turn off the head light it will stay running but if I turn it on and don't give it any throttle it will cut off.

My T100R is doing that. Have you upgraded any of the electrical equipment?

The alternator put's out about 9 amps at about 5000RPM, and at idle will be much less -1 to 2 amps at most. Depends on the state of the rotor magnet (they do deteriorate with age, heat and vibration), good connection from alternator through rectifier to battery, and the rotational speed.

The coils will draw around 4 amps when running (averaged out to about 2amps due to dwell angle), and the headlight about 4 amps, with tail light less than 1/2 amp. The battery will be rated about 7 to 9 amp/hours (if it's in really good condition).

So, drawing 6.5 to 7 amps out of the battery, and only putting 1 back in, means drwaing 5.5 or so amps from the battery, which will probably be less than perfect, means the voltage applied to the coils will drop below that required to create a spark good enough to ignite the mixture in the cylinders - engine stop.

My advice:

turn headlight off when idling
if you need to keep the headlight on while idling, raise the idle revs a little (eg 1500 RPM)
if you battery is weak, replace with an Absorbed Glass Mat maintenance-free type, at 9 amp/hour rating.
replace the alternator rotor (magnet)

hope this helps

Pete

yup.
mine will cut out too at idle, if the battery is weak.
much more pronounced if you have a boyer unit.
these bikes were never meant to run all day with the headlight on..

solutions:
upgrade your stator ring for more output.
install a halogen pilot light for daytime running.
top off battery nightly/every other day with trickle charger.

ps..
these bikes eat batteries.. the vibration kills the plates inside.
i get a new battery every season, as a matter of course. -j

They're not that hard on batteries! Try isolating the battery casing from the battery carrier by using neoprene or rubber strips. A battery should last at least three or four years depending on the amount of use. Periodic recharging of the battery in the off-season is also critical.
