Clutch cable help

HI
I have a 78 T140E that I have been working on for about a year now. Went to change the clutch cable and tried to adjust it so the lever returns when you let go. It dosent go back, it will if you push it back. So I removed the gear box outer cover and looked at the thrust plate and it does seem to work. could the spring be weak. also the clutch lever is free and not binding. Its a new cable does it need to be lubed? I am stuck on this one. This is a left shift bike any advise on putting the gear box cover back on. I really like this site and hope some of you tech guys can help me.

first make sure your cable is not too long , a common problem
2 lube it
3 replace that little spring on the "ramp" mechanism under the cover

To drlapo

HI drlapo
Thanks for your reply
The cable I got was a 8+ over stock and the reason I did this is becouse this bike is not stock its a hardtail with 14" apes. I got this bike on a bad debt and grew it love it. Now I am trying to complete it. I have completed most of it seat, tank, rear fender, custom made brake hoses ect. now I am down to the more technical stuff for me carbs, ignition stuff like that and I find this site very helpfull
Sorry to ramble, back to the cable what do you think??
As far as the spring I may just throw one in anyway I have it apart
Thanks for your help
Steve
