Can anyone answer a question regarding the wiring of a kill switch ? -- got a multifunction handle bar switch that's going on my latest project - the "kill switch" has one wire going to it - the switch is spring loaded in the open position - depressing the switch takes the circuit to "earth " - my T140 has a boyer ignition -- can this switch be used in conjunction with a Boyer ? - i am thinking no -and i don't want the added complication of a relay --
(pretty sure Stuart will know)
Its not intended to be a PM - its a question anyone can answer - it could also be of interest to others - its just that Stuart has a huge track record for answering elec based questions
my apologies if it offends anyone - and if necessary any moderator is welcome to delete my post
You're correct. Any of the standard Triumph DC kill switches have two wires - they work like any other switch (ignition, lights toggle, etc.), cutting the power between the battery and the consumer(s). It's these consumers (ignition coils, light bulbs, etc.) that are the resistance in the electrical circuit between battery -ve and battery +ve.
Otoh, with just "one [insulated] wire going to it", on your bike, that's from battery -ve, depressing it will connect it directly to battery +ve ("earth") without any significant resistance in between - the definition of a 'short circuit'
Honda used something similar in the late 1970's and early 1980's, when it thought e.i. shouldn't just have the power cut. Having then inflicted on the world something that would randomly stop ignitions working in damp and wet weather, they decided it was a crap idea and reverted to two-wire ignition and kill switches that worked just like any other switch had been working for years ... :Not again
I discarded my kill switch years ago.Never found a use for it, but i did have some fun when younger pushing the button on a downhill in town then releasing it for a big bang.I stopped that habit when it blew the side out of the silencer.
When you fit it,Wol,give it a try.Makes babies in prams wake up.
