On my 1970 T120R, I am currently using the stock tappet covers. Recently I have been chasing a little nuisance oil leak around and believe it is coming from these stock covers. I tightened them as best I could and was relying on the serrations to do their job, I don't believe they were. I see that the aftermarket ones have a better means of torquing. Is anyone using the starburst on a later sixties or seventies bike? Also does the starburst work with the dual Amals? Are the Emgo chrome ones any good? Thanks for any thoughts. Jim
For riding my '70 I used I used a set of chrome ones similar to the ones sold by CBS. Used the hex to snug them down. Nice thick soft gasket for sealing. Who are mine made by don't remember as I have had them over 30 years.
When I would show the bike replaced them with the stock ones. ,
:laughhard Just saw a picture guess I forgot once arn
Put a dab of silicone on the gaskets and wipe off as much as you can with your fingers. Seat the covers and go away for a while. Start it up.....no leaks....
Mine are always sealed with a little gasket compound.I use Blue Hylomar as it is easily cleaned off.Silicone is also a good option although i try to avoid its use where some might get into the oil system of the engine.
If by 'Starburst' you mean the Motao items, you can use them with twin carbs BUT you have to remove the carbs to get them on and off. I bought a set for my Bonneville but ended up not using them. On that engine I use the standard Triumph caps with the normal fibre washer and just a smear of ThreeBond (HondaBond, YamaBond, WhateverBond) on the threads. Not had any leaks.
I used the 'Starburst caps on my T90 as that only has one carb. They are supplied with an 'O' ring and I put them in with just a smear of silicone grease (NOT sealer) on the ring and nip them up with the supplied spanner. One thing I found was that the spanner was a very loose fit on the machined hexagon on the cap. A little too much pressure and the spanner slipped round the hexagon, burring up the corners. I did complain to Motao and they promised to send me a new set but they never arrived. Maybe they've increased the hexagon size now.
