Prop (Side) Stand Nut & Bolt, T140V?

On my 1977 T140 the original side stand Stop Nut (14-0402) was hard up against its bolt (14-0114), but on my friends 1976 T140 there was a space between the nut and the bolt.

I'm thinking, as well as performing a locking role, the nut and bolt arrangement might also perform an adjustment to the stand.

Should the bolt be hard up against the nut, or should I be using it to adjust the side stands closed position?

Thanks.

Hi,

as well as performing a locking role, the nut and bolt arrangement might also perform an adjustment to the stand.
To be absolutely clear:-

. the "14-0402 Nut" (#44 on parts book pages 42/43?) bracketed in "Prop stand stop" only locks the bracketed 14-0114 Bolt in position on the side/prop stand, it does not perform any other "locking role";

. "#43 Bolt" is only there to space the side/prop stand away from the frame tube so the rider can conveniently get his/her left foot to some part of the stand to flip it out/down without dismounting from the bike first.

Should the bolt be hard up against the nut, or should I be using it to adjust the side stands closed position?
So the nut position on the bolt is not a function of the nut.

First, the bolt head should be as far as necessary from the side/prop stand to perform its aforementioned function. Then #44 Nut should be tightened against the side/prop stand to lock the bolt in position. Where the Nut ends up relative to the bolt head is irrelevant.

Fwiw, because there isn't much thread in the side/prop stand, I find it better to spend a few minutes with bolts of different lengths, discovering the length that both sets the stand conveniently for the rider and uses all the thread in the stand. Then I fit the Nut to that to lock the bolt just to stop it vibrating loose and dropping out. That way, you aren't left with specifically a 14-0114 Bolt potentially using just a couple of threads in the sidestand and, when you tighten the nut, it rips these couple of threads out ... :Darn

Hth.

Nice information Stu. :smile2:

I've got the nut & bolt fitted to the prop stand which is on my bare frame.

Looks like I'll have to wait until I can get my wheels and other parts fitted before playing with the bolt length and final adjustment.
