Hi

Can anyone offer any suggestions in resolving a problem I have with a 3ta rear wheel speedometer gearbox ?

I am the process of trying to save an ex Dutch army 1967 3ta, it has been badly treated, missing parts and had odd parts fitted & has sttod for many years. Lots parts just thrown into a box.

I am trying to assemble the rear wheel spindle, spindle sleeve, spacer & gearbox.
I am not even sure if these are the correct parts for the machine as I cannot fit the spindle sleeve and spacer through the hole in the gearbox (just too big)

The photograph shows the parts I am struggling with the measurements are in inches (sorry about that) The manual I am using is workshop manual No 7.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Mike,

ex Dutch army 1967 3ta,

You know the top bit's a "Bearing sleeve" from a qd wheel? If so, that the speedo. drive won't it over it suggests it's the wrong drive. Is a larger centre hole revealed if you remove the brown ring?

The manual I am using is workshop manual No 7.
If you mean "Replacement Parts Catalogue No. 7", that's for 1966; No.8 is for 1967,although I don't think it makes much difference to the qd rear wheel parts. If you're using No.7 because No.8 has "From Engine No. H49833" and your bike has an engine number below that, you haven't read http://www.triumph-tiger-90.com/ for 1967, where it says, "Parts book No 8 covers the 1967 Machines from H49833 (ie not the Dutch Military Machines)" - it wouldn't because JH-J also says that the Dutch Army bikes had several "non-standard" parts? :) Btw, if you haven't read that site, it contains a working link to a Dutch site specifically about those bikes.

had odd parts fitted

Because of this, be aware that there are qd wheel parts with different threadforms:-

. up to 1970, the large-diameter threads were 20 tpi (turns/threads per inch) Cycle (aka CEI and BSC);

. for 1970 only, :rolleyes: they were 20 tpi UNEF (Unified Extra Fine);

. although both threadforms are 20tpi, they are not interchangeable, there are other microscopic differences between the threads that prevent them being used together; be aware that a lot of parts suppliers are not aware of these differences; :(

. the giveaway whether you have Cycle or Unified threads is the male one on the long 9/16" OD hex.-head spindle (not in your picture) that screws into the female one inside the brake drum stub axle - 20 tpi Cycle pre-'70, 18 tpi UNF '70 only.

Hth.

Regards,
