I have a problem with my kickstart on my 76 Bonne. Whenever I try and kickstart it the engine only turns over about 25% of the time, the rest of the time it just resisit slihgtly but doesn't do anything. I have an owners manual but that doesn't cover it. I think the clutch is slipping and want to try and fix it myself rather than have to go to my mechanic.

Is this a matter of checking the clutch plate?

after adjusting the clutch per your manual, I would change the primary oil and make sure to put in the correct oil per the owners manual. on my '72 Daytona , that would be 20-50 oil. I once had pure 50 w oil in the primary and had real problems getting the kickstarter to work properly. It might even be necessary to take apart your clutch plates and inspect 'em and wipe them free of oil. ( I do not believe that you should oil the clutch plates upon re-assembly though !)

Take the adjuster plug out of the pri. cover. When the eng. doesn't turn over see if the presure plate is moving. If it is the problem is most probably the clutches are slipping. If the plate isn't moving it's possible you have a damaged keyway at the clutch end of the mainshaft.
