I had the cylinders of a BSA A65 bored +.40. I started to install the oil ring on the first piston. When I barely began to expand the ring a small piece of it "popped" off. I realize these are cast rings but I have never seen one do that before.
The ring is still in one piece, it didn't crack or break.
Did I screw up?
i have yet to break a piston ring while fitting them ( 40 plus years ) but every time i am fitting them i dread to hear that sound - -- you were just unlucky --- and a new set ain't cheap
Hi, Probably not your fault. I expect there was possibly a bad spot on the metal. Cast rings can be quite brittle though & must be spread the very least as possible. As was stated, check ring gap as that is a way to verify the rings are to bore size & also you need to be certain gap is within specs.
Call the ring seller. They may have a loose ring they can give you. We used to keep the remains of sets that were spoiled for such occasion. They came in handy several times.
I was doing a valve job on my Tiger 750 when I was removing a keeper the corner of it fell off. Head was original from new, never apart. I've had literally thousands of keepers off & never seen that. Still puzzles me. Luckily it was just a small piece & didn't come loose while running.

The piece broke off of the oil control ring; a "double" faced ring without expanders. Only a small piece of the top face popped off. I'm suspecting a faulty ring and will show it to the retailer and request a replacement.
Your lucky it happened when it did rather than after start up.
