Triumph ID Challenge!!!

Okay folks, here's one for you old timers. I have a titled 65 TR6C that I'm doing a total rebuild on. I ordered what should have been the correct cam gear pullers for that year only to find it would not work with my Cam's.

The cam's that are fitted on my bike have the two tapped screw holes for what I have come to learn is the later year cam's.

Is there any other way then the engine stamp numbers to ID the year the bike was build in? I guess I'm not 100% confident on this engine being what the sell sold me.

Also last night I noticed on the very bottom of the engine motor mount (both case halves) the number 448.

What's that mean?

Thanks guys

The numbers stamped on the bottom boss of the engine cases show that they are matching halves, as both sides share the same number.
Build dates for the '65's are DU14226 to DU23732, 27/8/1964 to 21/6/1965
I can't understand why the camwheel pullers didn't fit as they are all the same thread at least to 1970, not sure after though.

two types of cams

There are at least two types of cams from what I know.

I have the type that have two holes for the cam puller to go into which from my understand are the 70's type cams.

The came I should have should require the tool that uses a singe (large) cylinder to screw onto the cam (early 60's type).

Thanks for the info about the matching halves. That does help me feel more confident that the previous owner simply put on newer cams.

Now, if I have cams from a 70's bike, will I do timing from a 70's bike?

Don't worry, the later cam wheels which you have are BETTER. Depending on which set of later ones they are, you will have different markings. Some have lines / dots, some have letters (A,B). Just make sure you set the timing, correct for the camshafts you are using and that the tappets are the correct radius for them.......

Are the cams interchangeable?

My inlet and exhaust cams only have dots on them, my center came as a line and dots I think. I would have to check for sure.

OK fit the cam wheels so that the dot is aligned on the woodruff key side. Put crank pinion at TDC, loosly fit intermediate wheel and turn inlet cam dot to the long line on the intermediate wheel and the dot to dot on the exhaust, obviously with the 2 lines on the intermediate wheel either side of the crank pinion, sorted.
