Newbie with '74 Trophy trail

I wanted to introduce myself,I just p/up a '74 Trophy trail all original except for normal wear items(tires,grips...etc)for $300.00.Here's the kicker...it sat outside for 20 years and needs a lot of love and there is a problem with the kickstarter engaging.

My plan is to see if it will start and then tear her down for a restoration.

Are parts readily available and if so from whom?

This is my first Triumph but have been riding/racing for 31 years now...all on Japanese machinery,I do most (80%) of my own work as I don't trust someone I don't know to wrench on my bikes.

I'll post some pics soon

Take care

Parts "should be" easily available for your bike, but it might depend on your "location" as to HOW easily. Most stuff can be had through mail order. Your general "location" would be benificial. (i.e. what country are you in? And where?) Being your own "wrench" is half the "fun?". Getting "deliveries" every other day (it's like Christmas) is the other half!

What models have interchangeable parts...Ebay doesn't offer to much for the Trophy trail or TR5T

Most of the basic parts are interchangeable, some even back several model years.

Just about anyone who deals in Meriden Triumph parts can get you what you need.

Start with a shop manual and parts book. take your time.

Might be just me, but if it was sitting outside for TWENTY YEARS I would think that "getting it going" might do more harm than good. There's no way of knowing if there's blobs of rust on crank journals, bearing surfaces, in oilways etc. Not to mention the dreaded Sludge Trap.

The 500 engine is pretty easy to work on, I'd plan on tearing it down to the crank and going from there.

It shares many cycle parts with the BSA B50/25 OIF 1971-on bikes (Re-badged Triumph versions as well, of course).

I would agree

...get yourself some british wrenches and rip it open before you try to fire it up again.

There's a Triumph rebuild video made by fouraces. Get it.
