Hi, Are all 4 stud holes in bottom of frame for filter blind or do they go into oil space, if even slightly?
Thanks, Don

Hi,Don. I saw your post so I went out to see what you were looking at. I flipped over 2 1971 frames and from what I can see is you have about 3/8 deep of threads then there is a larger empty cavity but I dont see where the studs would enter the oil tank at all. Hope this helps,Mike

They are on the outside of the oil carrying tube. They are in a relatively thin frame plate as noted above about 3/8 inch. Then there is a gap and then a plate above them. The metal with threads is too thin to hold a helicoil if they are stripped. I solved that problem on mine by tapping to the next biggest metric size and using a metric size stud. You have to drill the opening in the plate slightly larger to clear the stud.

Thank you very much. I was going to seal them if they went into oil to prevent leaks. I tend to get a tiny seep around one of the front studs. I flattened the sump plate, but no real help. Not a drip, but threads get oily. Just bugs me.

I've not checked the frame bottom for flatness. I got a motao filter kit & don't want any seeps at all.

Always worth the ask Don. I can recall on certain GM V8 engines where the head bolts went straight into a water jacket. Problems there if you didn't use a thread sealant! :) RR

Although mine do not leak,i like a little oil on that bottom plate to keep rust away from the nuts/studs so i do put oil on them.A lot of rain water is directed in that direction especially from the rear wheel.Over the years of reading here,i notice there have been cases of studs snapping,so,i can only assume they get rusty.

As far as stripped studs. The original studs are 5/16" and you can use an M8, just slightly bigger. You may not even need to redrill the hole, just run the tap. Most autoparts stores carry the studs and tap. As I mentioned the only other thing you need to do is slightly enlarge the opening in the drain plate. I put the studs in with red loctite, one of the few places I used the red. I also run an aftermarket oil filter and don't drop the plate on routine oil changes. I did after about 5k miles and the screen was completely clean.
