T140 Exhaust Header Gasket?

I'm getting a lot of exhaust coming out at the flange where the header enters the head, is there a gasket that needs replaced there or???

I remember someone said something about a copper "smash" gasket but is that the way it's done? Gotta seal this up one way or another.
Thanks!!!

I have a 79 T140E and it does not have gaskets where the pipe goes into the head. I just pushed them in untill they were home and tightened the engine brackets and muffler brackets while pulling the pipe towards the rear of the bike. I have'nt had any exhaust leaks.

Like Dirty Harry I have not used any gasketing ,just made sure that the push in headers were really seated in there by using a soft deadblow mallet, then tightening everything up from front to back on the exhaust system.
Various bonneville models had different diameter headers ,so you may want to make sure that your bike has not been modified to take a larger size than you are using now.
I think theres some high temp silicone stuff you could use barring any other solution.

Is THIS what you were thinking of - it uses a large copper 'Olive' - similar to a plumbing compression fitting, which is forced in by the outer alloy ring.

Or is yours a T140D with the two into one system. This uses sealing washers behind the gland nut? Perhaps it's just an old push in system which has seen better dayzzzzzz.

A year and model description would be helpful. I'm guesseing that you have the push-in type which has no flange holding them in just the finned collar which is apparently there just to provide some cooling and doesn't touch the head. If so, just run a bead of high temp silicon sealer around the pipe before its shoved in. Also, use a rubber mallet to make sure the pipes are fully seated. Don't use anything hard like a block of wood or you will dent the pipe, don't ask me how I know. I've heard of in bad cases people make shims out of beer or soda cans. The sealer sealed my leaks.

The ports on my 77 were so enlarged, I had to "pound-in" some brass flatstock between the pipe and the head. Then I sealed everything with silicone seal. (Didn't seem to matter whether it was Hi-heat or not). Everything worked out well.
