76 bonne stanchion seal replacement

hello gentlemen, i need to pick your brains for a moment. i have a 76 bonneville basket case and this is my first brit bike. i am starting to rebuild the front end. i had no problem getting the forks apart but the stanchion ( tube ) seals have me a little perplexed. i have a manual but i dont think a simple seal puller is going to tackle this thing. they seem to have a 3/16" thick aluminum washer over top?? its like as if this washer was pressed down over top. perhaps this is OEM and the seals have never been changed but i need to know if there is something special about getting them ( the seals ) out? i can use a slide hammer or drill, tap and pull them out but before i start anything drastic is there an easy way? OR if this is a factory set up do i need to do anything special first ( like cutting with a dremel)?

My factory manual for a 71, which should have the same forks, doesn't show such a washer, nor does my Haynes manual. Are you sure the forks go with the bike? You never know with a basket case.

yep a washer

from the reseach i have found out talking to guys there were 2 kinds of seals. what i have is ether a later version or someone replaced the seals with this "kit". but there is a washer 1/8 inch thick overtop of the seal. but the good news is i supposedly do not have to remove it. the "newer leakproof seal" can be removed and replaced like an o-ring. i havent had a chance to play with it yet but if that is so the job is going to go like a breeze. i am learning that the manuals...even the factory ones dont tell you quite everything.

Why are you assuming that the original seals are bad? What is the state of the stanchions? The seals may work just fine when the bike is put back on the road. If not, its not too difficult to replace them at that time.
