Hey all I just picked up front frame that is stamped 6T DU----- and it dates to 66 but it has no side stand lug and never did from factory looked through all my books and the all say it should .not to worried about it I will just run a main stand but it has got me guessing why no lug ? Thoughts
Cheers from tassie
I believe that it should have had one - maybe it broke off and was ground smooth ? - is there a "boss" in the area where they normally fit or is it a continuous tube under the engine
Yes it had one when it left the factory, they were not an option. It is however more than common for them to break and since the lug is simply slipped over the frame tube and then brazed it would be easy for a competent person to remove and leave no evidence for the uninitiated to spot.
Speaking of kickstand lugs, I almost always see bikes on side stands leaning way too far over, putting added stress on the kickstand, lug, and frame tube. By leaning the bike more upright it relieves some of the weight on it( and makes picture taking better). I have taken a cutting wheel and cut almost all the way through the thick part of the lug where it welds to the frame and with the kick stand installed bend the tab down to where I like the lean angle of the bike and then remove the stand and weld up the new gap.
I'm now in the habit of leaving the stand down when the bike is on the lift. If you recall, a few months back I had the bike lifted just off the floor but not yet on the safety latch on the lift and the lift leaked down. If found the bike on the ground the next day with damage. Now if it leaks down it just settles onto the stand.
Am getting it blasted so that will tell but there is nothing ?
