Question T140 wet sumping.

Hello,I have recently been restoring a late seventies Triumph T140.The problem is it is wet sumping while running,I have tried different oil pumps including rotary, rebores, new rubber pipes and checked oil ways but it is still burning oil in the left cylinder.Oil is returning but the pump is still leaving oil in the crankcase,if left running it will fill the crankcase up completly.Too much oil going in but not enough coming out.Is there a cure for this.
Yours Faithfully Kevin 17.

Kev,

Oil burning in the left cylinder only, could be worn valve guides or valve stems.

In regard to the wet sumping, it sounds as though you've tried all the usual suspects. I'm wondering if there's a restriction in the pickup pipe at the bottom of the crankcase (where the drain plug and gauze filter are). This goes direct to the suction side of the return side of the oil pump, and if it's restricted (not blocked), you'd get get more oil being pumped in than is being returned. It's more likely to be the suck side than the pressure side of the oil return pump. Of course, getting to it means stripping the engine and splitting the crankcase halves - not for the faint-hearted. Or you could try cleaning it out with a long wire and spray cleaner (eg degreaser with a long plastic tube on the nozzle) from the bottom. Have the pump off the engine if your gonna do this. The pipe may also be bent, restricting the flow.

Just tossing some ideas out.....

just thought of something else.....but you've probably checked it already.

make sure you haven't put the oil pump gasket around the wrong way, restricting the hole for the intake of the return side of the pump. Can happen easily.

To Ozbloke

Hello Oz,thanks for the advice, but I have checked the engine throughly, its either a broken pump or a restriction in the oil passage.I cannot find any restrictions, are there any adjustable oil pumps out there.

Totis viribus.

Other may have more of an idea on adjustable pumps - not sure I'd want o go that way.

Very early in the morning here (5AM), and just about to jump on a plane, and I've got some ideas, but don't know if I can get them down before I have to go....

Not trying to be patronizing, just trying to help sort your issue...

Are you filling up the primary chaincase too much, and oil seeping back into the crankcase? only need 150CC in primary.

Have you checked the small pipe at the top of the OIF, where the return line fits on, and the line to the valve gear comes off. If it's restricted going back into the frame, you'll get too much oil going to the top end, and maybe restrict the flow coming back from the engine.

Burning oil in left cylinder - Is your breather pipe blocked - possibly causing blow-by past the rings?

taxi here - gotta go.
