68 Bonneville

I finally got around to getting some help in posting these. Lets see how good the help was. This is what it looked like when I bought it. It had been sitting for 15 years so everything was pretty gummed up. The tank is still curing (Krem treatment). I've installed new Amals and a new battery and fired it up with a plastic bottle for gas. Have new seat & exhaust waiting.

Not bad looking. If it were mine, I'd get it back to original colors ASAP and then only replace what was needed. Looks good! Good Luck...Have Fun!

Wonder how gummed up the sludge trap is?

1st Ride.

I rode the beast up and down the block a few times last night after reassembling and installing the tank. One of the petcocks leaks. I had them apart when I was cleaning out the tank. The o-rings were hard and one of them broke so I replaced them. My parts manual doesn't give a part number for the o-rings, just the petcock so I had to go with local supply but couldn't find a good match from the selection available. I rode it anyway. The clutch slips and drags and the shift indexing is sloppy so I suspect it has more miles on it than what is showing on the speedo. Can't say about the sludge trap. I haven't been able to contact the previous owner to find out what, if anything was done to the engine or how many miles it has on it since he reassembled it when he bought it. I have been putting it off because I have very limited time available to play mechanic but its looking more and more like tear down time. Rats, I wanted to ride this thing in stock trim to get a comparrison of Merridian to Hinkley Bonnevilles. If I tear it down, I'm not going back stock. Mecchanicas advice on upgrades is probably the direction I'll go. BY the way, It felt strange to shift on the "other" side after all these years.
