new guy needs help with an old bonnie

Hello! This is my first post on this forum so please be gentle. :-)
I`ve recently received a 1973 bonneville 650 with BSA logo and badges and I`m tryng to get it ready for technical inspection. Main problem is finding a short that seems to have hidden itself rather well so I`m trying to find a wiring diagram for the bike. Does anybody know of a site where i can find said diagrams? Thanks.

I,
Firstly, welcome to the forum. Best thing you can do first up is get yourself a Haynes or Clymers workshop manual (Haynes Triumph 650 & 750 2-Valve Unit Twins - 1963 to 1983). These books contain the wiring diagrams for many models.

If you want a diagram quick, PM me and give me a few more details of the bike, I could scan one for you and email it to you. Need your email address, engine/frame number, home or export model, basic description of electrics (does it have a battery/alternator, or magento ignition) is there a light switch on the headlamp shell, etc).

To find a short, try this:

In place of the fuse, wire in a 12v 20W lamp. The lamp will light when a short is present somewhere in the systems (eg when ignition switch is turned on). Taking note of where wires go, and with lamp glowing (short present), start disconnecting & reconnecting things like the rectifier, zener, light switch, coils, etc until the lamp goes out. This will give you the general area of the fault, and allow you to quickly isolate the problem further. When done, simply put the fuse back and take the lamp out.

Hope this helps

Pete
