Fuel Tank Question

On a T100 Fuel tank with 2 petcocks, is there a certain one that is the reserve? Thanks

I think you can use either, from memory there is a high ridge running through the middle of the tank bottom to make room for the frame tube. It forms a barrier. Note also when there is not enough fuel to run either, leaning the bike onto its side will allow a last drop of extra fuel into the low side. Many racers ran with both taps open.

Panda is right about the centre seperator. You may also find, if you take the petcocks out of the tank, that one of them has a tube ruuning up inside the gauze filter, and one of them doesn't. The one with the tube is the primary (takes fuel down to a certain level), and the one without the tube is the reserve petcock (take fuel at a lower level). With the internal shape of the tank, it wouldn't hurt to run two petcocks without the tube - the shape of the tank provides a fairly decent divider.

If you've ever pushed a bike for more than 20 yards, you'll recognise that riding with both taps on is a bit silly (might be OK for racers with known fuel quantities and pit crews handy). Reserve comes in real handy to get to the nearest fuel station....

Right or left for reserve doesn't really matter. My primary is on the right, because when I need to turn the reserve on while riding, I want to do it with my left hand.

I too put the reserve on the right as I want to be able to work the throttle a little while transitioning from empty to reserve. Best side for me and can't see why anyone would put it on the right.

Oh, well just my thoughts

I'm not positive about the T100's but the 650's had an "R" stamped into the left hand petcock lever. I think my old '72 Daytona did as well. If they're still factory ones, check them out: Jim

Jim's on the money there. Left hand (drive) side is the RESERVE tap and the Right (timing) side has the tap with the tube inside the gauze filter. F12800 reserve tap and F12801 main tap.

I remove the screen from the petcock to allow the schmutz to exit the tank. It will build up in the float bowl where I have fitted a monobloc main jet cap to provide a sump for water, paint chips, rust, etc to build up without getting to the main jet. It's hex so it can be much more easily removed and drained, compared to the stock plastic or brass plug. You can put a little ball of cotton in the bottom to trap the odd bits and keep them from sloshing about. Corrosion has killed more lovely fuel tanks than crashes, and it is caused by water in the fuel. Fuel is hygroscopic. Bits of stuff which lay on the bottom, especially if they have any metallic content which is different from the tank, will cause "poultice corrosion" at the contact point. Don't let stuff build up in the tank and don't let fuel sit in it for any long periods, even in relatively dry climates.
