Smile 70 Bonny Shocks

I restored a 70 Bonny. Vin # is ED 56108. The guy that rebiult my motor is an antique Triumph Mechanic from the old days. He is absolutley certain that my 70 had covered shocks on it from the factory. Says the time frame of construction,March I believe, is why. I have never seen a picture of any 70's with covered shocks. Also the horns for it. I noticed on a posting here that my bike shouldnt have the twin clearhooter horns on it. Is this correct? What are the proper horns?

Hi Fogcutter, Kadutz is on the money here.
Your bike was built in MAY 1970 not March as you thought. It also appears from the pic that the amber side reflectors are missing, just above the horns? The rear grab rail should be ALL chrome.
I would also get the timing checked on the left cylinder, looks a bit retarded to me? NICE BIKE!
Roy.

You are also missing the strap connecting the two muffler clamps. This is important for stability of the exhaust, to keep from woggling out the threads in the exhaust ports. The mufflers don't have the nice taper that Triumph mufflers used.
Need a little rubber on the centerstand, too. Gives it a nice finished look. Original air filters would have been fitted with the solid surface up to keep rain out, and used the white gauze filter elements....those orange paper elements are not very free flowing and are usually fitted in the less expensive replacement filter assys. The filter should have a dished back.....can't tell if you have that or not. The carbs look to be new replacements, not original, but they have sensible and functional upgrades.
The fuel lines would have been clear vinyl with crimped ends and the fittings on the petcocks would be the 90 degree type.

But hey, it's a beautiful bike. How does it run?

Think those mufflers come from Armours here in England. Looks like their shape? Wonder if the support bracket is fitted to the horns? 'WOGGLING' excellent word Mecchanica!
Roy.

Well, thanks, Roy, it sounded right....a bit of a wiggle, a bit of a wobble, and some grinding and galling. Actually too cute a word for the ugly mess you can end up with. Kim

I believe early 70 came with grey face while later ones had the black face gauges.

DAGAD
all the 70's I have seen have a black & chrome lift rail. I have only seen the all chrome in pictures.

I cant see the pictures as I am the J.D. of this site so I am limiting my comments tired of getting hit with violations of the AUP.

My favorite year for the Bonnie.

VERY nice example, and you now have the info to make it more correct should you desire to do so. If not, I sure won't gripe! If it runs anywhere near as well as it looks, it must be a hoot and a half. Well, twin hoots, okay?

Thanks guys

Thanks for the info. You guys certainly know your stuff. Yes the timing was retarded. I also had problems with carbs. Coundnt adjust air mixture. Pilot air mixture problems. These pics were taken only minutes after I finished the bike. Had only short ride. I have the reflectors for it but wanted to wait to install them until I have everything dialed in right. You know what a PIA they are to get on and off. Silencers are from England and are Stainless.I polished them up a bit more. When I took it for a ride shortly after the pics were taken, the throttle slide stuck on me with accelerating. Enough to rattle the shorts a little. I have since bought new carbs. The grab rail is the original that was on the bike. I just fabricated a stainless bar for it. Are you talking about the bracket that connects the pipes together at the point where the mufflers connect? This bike actually only has 7200 original miles on it but went up in flames in 1974. Was stored in a barn ever since. I am the second owner. Took alot to get it to the point you see in the pics. Unfortunately Wisconsin weather set in and I had to put it away for a while. Too hard to keep upright on ice and snow. Cant wait for Spring. Thank for your help. I have the clearhooter horns but they need rebuilding. Know anyone? Tom

Thank for the ego boost Grand paulZ. Went to your site. when i can get it together,I will send you before and after pics.
