Voltage regulator

I saw a post during the summer about using a regulator bought at radio shack. I was thinking of trying one on my 76T140v. Is there a special one that I should use. Rod

I think you might be thinking of a rectifier, which R.S. sells. Years ago, they sometimes stocked the Japanese made replacement for the zener, but I haven't seen those for a while.
Better to get a motorcycle specific item. Sparx makes a rectifier/regulator combo that looks like the oval finned stock zener heat sink as found on the 68-70 Triumphs and 500s to 74.
There are also rectangular boxes with fins from Tympanium and Sparx. You can fit a capacitor and dump the battery, or buy one of the Rect./reg. units with a capacitor inside. Old school would be a mity max, and I think Sparx has one now, too.

Modern rectifier

Klicker,
Any electronic parts supplier will be able to sell you a 20Amp or 25Amp full wave bridge rectifier with 4 blade terminals. Radio Shack part number is 276-1185 (need to check it has blade terminals). Less than $4

They come as a 25mm square block, about 8-10 mm high, with a centre hole for mounting. What I did on my 77 was to take the old rectifier out, mount a 1 inch wide aluminium L bracket in same spot, and mount the new rectifier on the L backet, with the blade connectors facing to the wiring connectors. Gives a bit more room in the coil area, and is rated well above what the alternator is capable of delivering.

You'll need to make sure you have good electical contact between L bracket and metal tray where the recifier /coils mount. Also, when you mount the rectifier on the L bracket, use a wire or eyelet terminal to connect the centre monting bolt to the positive Terminal on the rectifier. The four terminals on the rectifier are: 2 for AC(marked ~), one for negative (-) and one for Positive(+, ground in your case). Connect the two green wires to the ~ terminals, the brown/blue from the battery/fuse to the negative terminal, and the red to the positive terminal.

If this is all too confusing, send me a PM with your email address, and I'll take some photos.
