Steering Stem Nut HELP

1972 TR6-R. I replaced the steering head bearings and can not get the nut to tighten on the stem. Is there some sort of trick to this?

It feels like it will start but then releases. The bike only has 2,000 miles on it and I believe this to be the first time the nut was ever removed.

It is a slotted nut.

Thanks,

TD

Was this a sealed bearing or rollers and cup that you replaced? You may find 1 or 2 rollers have fallen out either at the top or bottom, thus extending the reach of the adjusting nut. Check carefully because this can cause serious damage. Just recheck it.

They are Timkin roller type and they definitely seating correctly the nut refuses to thread on.

Is there a load on the wheel? If so, the angle deflects the stem to the rear a little. Try opening up the slot with a wedge, like a screwdriver and unloading the front wheel with a jack. Should go right on, if there are good threads.

Thanks Mech. the forks and wheel are off the bike. Just the stem so it is about as unladen as it can get. I will try opening the slot up with a wedge. Thank you all very much.

Sitting here in my wine induced stupor and recall that there are two nuts which look very similar...one for conical hub bottom yokes and one for disc brake. Look the same, but different threads.
