Hi Vern,
You're forgetting what you've asked and had answered already ...
["boyer" is] an electronic ignition (hence its connection to the ignition coils), just replaces the points and auto-advance unit under the circular plate in the timing cover. All that OldBritts diagram shows is how to wire just the e.i.; (Boyer-)Bransden confuse the issue by actually calling the collection of electronics in the old points/aau cavity a "Stator
Plate"
but it isn't the
alternator stator.
the reg rec you recommended should be here soon. I see the stator wires go to the regrec. Do they also need to split & go to the boyer?
Uh-uh. Alternator generates AC (Alternating Current), electronic ignition needs DC (Direct Current).
The rectifier (the "rec" bit of "reg rec") turns AC into DC (the "reg" bit 'regulates'
) to charge the battery. In turn, the battery supplies DC to the "boyer" e.i.
If the "boyer" on the bike is still connected exactly as shown in the OldBritts diagram, it's getting DC from the battery; don't f**k with it. If you connect any part of the "boyer" to the
alternator stator, it will be f**ked.
Connect the alternator stator to the reg./rec.
1. If the alternator stator has three wires - White/Green, Green/Yellow and Green/Black:-
a. connect White/Green to one reg./rec. Yellow wire;
b. connect Green/Yellow
and Green/Black to another Yellow wire;
c. disconnect the third Yellow wire from the reg./rec. plug.
2. If the alternator stator has just two wires - White/Green and Green/Yellow:-
a. connect White/Green to one reg./rec. Yellow wire;
b. connect Green/Yellow to another Yellow wire;
c. disconnect the third Yellow wire from the reg./rec. plug.
Connect the reg./rec. to the battery
A. Connect the reg./rec. Red wire to battery +ve.
B. Connect the reg./rec. Green wire to battery -ve.
If the bike has an ammeter (in the headlamp shell as standard), it'll show just a discharge (as standard, the ammeter's connected between battery -ve and the ignition switch). Don't worry about it at the moment, just get the basic electrics working.
When the engine's running, the above should have the alternator generating AC, charging the battery with DC from the rec. part part of the reg./rec. :doublethumb
Hth.
