Greyhound, fwiw, I have a podtronics unit on my bike ('73 Daytona) with a 3 phase alternator. The fitting instructions say it should be fitted in such a way as to allow airflow around it. I have mine mounted onto the front of the battery box, behind the cylinders & adjacent to the frame main downtube. I've felt it a couple of times whilst I've been out on a ride, to see if it was getting hot at all, & it wasn't even warm. I'd guess that fitting it under the seat would be ok, provided you can maintain sufficient airflow all around it.
regards
Cuppa
To avoid confusion, I should add that I have modified my bike, & consequently it does not have a stock battery box. When fabricating the battery box, I included studs as part of the design on which to 'hang' the podtronic unit.
