So i've been through this forum and many google searches, and I cannot decide what muffler to buy. The stock ones are garbage, rusted through, so I ran without them for a time. The sound was gorgeous, but unbearably loud, so, reluctantly, I put them back on. Way too quiet. In short, I'm looking for a muffler for my T140V that is 3/4 the loudness of straight piped. I saw Burgess-style ones that were made to fit a T140, they look good but I have no idea the loudness of them. Megaphones are a bit bulky for my taste. Any ideas appreciated.
Lot's of parts vendors sell a Norton Commando peashooter type that is the correct diameter and has mounting bolts to fit a T140 Triumph. I have a set on mine, great sound and better performance. You may need to rejet the carb. I did.
The ones I got are straight through. I have a 78 t140e with the Mark II carbs and the stock ones on it were pretty restricted and quiet. I also replaced the air cleaners elements with Unifoam ones. The stock ones are pretty restrictive. Like I said I also reconfigured the carbs. Seat of the pants says maybe a slight performance gain but it sounds a lot better. Hard to describe but more of a deeper sound. I don't think I would want it any louder.
I have Burgess type on my 77 T140 and I love them . Most Dunstall type and these Burgess type 'burn in' (or burn out) and get a bit louder after a couple of months . I tried the straight pipes too for a short time ,it was crazy loud ...setting off car alarms everywhere. The Burgess type sound just about right ,not quiet by any means but reasonable and vintage like.
Norton type sound fine but to me ,they belong on a Norton ,just a looks thing .
Thanks for the help guys, I think I'm going to try the Burgess-style because I like the 60's look, so I guess I'll try to find them in the loudest configuration, worst case scenario I can always take them off for a few days to remind me why we have mufflers!
Im pretty sure I got Emgo with the extended inlet pipe to work with the stock headers . I had to make some hanger brackets out of 1/4" aluminum plate .
The inlets will only be on the headers a couple of inches ..they have to be back enough to clear the kicker
I tried around 5 types and have an old set of Campbell short megaphone on right now.Just right for medium noise.I found straight through, unrestricted, saps power at lower engine speeds.
Hi 76_T140. On my 1976 T140 I have peashooters and, to my mind, they really suit the look of the bike and sound just right. From memory the pair cost £90 and I haven't needed to rejet.
Are they what i would call tulip type ? If so,they work very well with baffles in and lose power with baffles out. They did sound very good until mine fractured and fell off before getting run over by another vehicle.
Just ordered the Sixties style (burgess) from Britbikebits.com, hopefully I will be satisfied, since shipping to the states isn't cheap!
