I'm just talking about sychronizing the carbs. Guess tuning was the wrong word, yep meant synchronizing. Kyle

They are easy enough to sync- the hard part is keeping them that way. It's just a matter of adjusting the cables so that both carbs open and close together.

First you set the throttle stops and mixture screws to spec. Then you set the idle speed by adjusting the throttle stops equal amounts.

Then its just a matter of tweaking the mixture screws to get the strongest idle. Once that is done you can finally adjust the idle speed again. If you can get hold of a colourtune it makes fine tuning more precise.

He's right - it's not that bad to do, just annoying to do once a month. It will also "feel" wrong if it slips, one side will be louder, one pipe hotter etc.

And what's the performance gains to be had? Isnt' it something like 6mph topend? I assume once it's done a few times, the process gets easier. Kyle

I don't think it's so much a question of a performance gain, just routine maintenance to keep the bike running sweet. If the carbs are not synced it would make for rougher running and maybe put additional stresses on the engine.

I'd imagine the crank would be stressed more than it should be if out of tune on one carb, but what I meant was performance gain over the single carb head. Kyle

Can't say my Bonneville has needed the carbs sync'd more than a couple of times in 10,000 miles, and I think that once of those was just because I tend to tinker.

As far as hot-rodding, I don't think you can expect it to be worthwhile. If you gain 10%........of 48 hp, you'll never feel it. And it will bee all at the top end where the vibes are pretty scarey.

I have always told my VW friends that you can't hop-up a Beetle (vintage) no matter how much money you throw at it. I feel the same way about my Bonneville. That's a good reason to enjoy it for what it is and have another bike for your other needs.

I have had both a 650 and a 750, and frankly I prefered the 650 much more. There was more willingness to rev and less shake. I wouldn't go the 750 route if it were mine.
