Timing light hook up

Set the points and wanted to check the timing, but I cant seem to get the strobe(brand new)to light up.Had the -ve clip to the -ve on the battery and the red to one of the engine mounting screws.Inductive clamp on the spark plug wire.
Any thoughts?
Thanks.

I think you are supposed to hook up the timing light to a seperate battery than the one on your bike. I just did this the other day and it worked great.

Gray's correct....the factory manual says to use a "separate power source" for the timing light. I've use a battery charger in the past, but some of the new ones seem to need the charger to be hooked to a battery for the light to work. Even an old tired battery will do for the light.

Hope this helps: Jim

I just use jumper cables off my truck. I rigged up a little wooden box with couple of bolts sticking out to attach the free ends to. This prevents them from getting in a tangle and touching each other.

I use the on-board battery, but only if it's new and fully charged. The discrepancies are minimal.

Using an external battery did it,but only on one side.I assume there is no current going through the left spark plug cable.
Could it because of the broken bracket that mounts the left horn as in picture?
Thanks.
