Running on one cylinder...

I just got my bike running with a Joe Hunt mag. Its a '67 bonnie. The timing was pretty close with the timing light but not right on the mark. I think it was too advanced. Anyway, the biike was running on one cylinder until i opened up the throttle then it would fire both cylinders and haul ass. Why would it be only firing one cylinder?

Also, after I got back from the ride found that the taper shaft for the Joe Hunt had sheared off in the camshaft. Any tips on removing this and preventing it from happening again?

Thanks, Gray

I'd suspect the plug or plug wire. Perhaps the cap has a crack or a carbon track in it. The Hunt mag is dual fire, and so the coil/mag/points must be working or you'd get no fire at all.
Or the carb. Make sure you are getting enough fuel to it and that the needle is seated in the clip and slide properly. You might have to remove the air filters to get a finger on the needle to guide it into the emulsion tube without hanging up on the edge.

Sounds as if the throttle slides are opening up at different times. Put a cocktail stick with a spot of plasticene or blue tack on the end of the stick to give weight. Put other end under carb throttle slide and slowly open up the carb watching carefully. Adjust cables until slides open up exactly, then all will be fine.
