new gas tanks

Some good news. The vendor that I ordered some stuff from today said that they are working with one of their suppliers to make new tanks available for the vintage bonnie's.Hopefully they will be reasonably priced and of good quality. It would surely be a better choice than patching up the old ones as far as I'm concerned.

I have always thought someone could have gotten rich by now making reproduction Bonneville gas tanks. It's about time!

T140 US type tanks are already available. Not cheap, but available. They are out of India, I believe. It shouldn't be that much more trouble to do the mounts for the early ones, and delete the center mount.

Paul, I think you found your new calling. Fabricate thousands of gas and oil tanks! Make your millions and then race all the bikes you want!

Only problem is the old saying "you've got to SPEND money to MAKE money". Tooling up and manpower to make a lot of tanks can't be cheap. I'm cheap.

If they are like some of the parts I get from repro's, they'll probably leak or have bad threads. Just some of the stuff I recieved from 'reputable' suppliers. Rocker cap had oversize threads, magneto mounting nuts were made undersize or wrong TPI, a LOT of rubber pieces turned to crumb in no time, shifter rubber did not fit, clutch cable had to be adjusted to max right from the get-go. If I bought a repro-tank, I'd have sealer put in it right away, after the petcock threads are checked out.
I know a dude that had an original old tank. He cut the bottom out and put a gas tank from a lawnmower inside, then welded the tanks' bottom on. A little grinding and molding, it looked good!
Good luck with a repro tank. I bought a 'custom' tank back in the 70's. It developed a leak within a month.
