I'm at the stage of fitting the engine back into the frame of my 68 bonnie. I'm going to use the lay the engine on its side and lower the frame down over it method, question is, can I fit the rocker boxes to the head and have everything torqued down and still (just) lower the frame over everything or do I still need to leave the r/boxes off, just like when you take take the engine out with the bike upright?
I do it all the time with the rocker boxes in place. If the frame has nice or fresh paint, wrap with thin foam etc. for protection. I lay motor timing side down and slowly lower frame with rocker boxes toward the neck area. It's even easier with a second frame holder but I always done it solo.
Well, I can confirm that I don't seem to possess the magic touch needed to fit the engine with the rocker boxes fitted. After scratching the frame numerous times- yes, I wrapped the frame is towels , I ended up removing the boxes. One minute later the frame was fitted. I'm not disputing the fitting can't be done but my advice to those who are doing this for the first time would be removed the boxes and save your frame.
