I have a 1970 Tiger, JD26060. I think that my Ammeter is starting to malfunction. When I engaged the light switch, all power, save for the horn, was lost and the bike died. No light, no oil pressure light no spark. However, when I jumped the two wires on either side of the ammeter together, all power was restored and the bike started. This first happened many months ago and I thought I fixed the problem as I had a questionable ground wire. But yesterday it happened again and once again this morning. Each time "fixed" by jumping the wires. I plan on buying a new ammeter and this is where I need your knowledge. My bike is about 98% original and I want to replace the ammeter with the correct one. (I don't believe that the one on my bike is original). My parts book gives two part numbers for the Ammeter type 2AR, 3-6403 and 99-1044. which one is correct for my bike and where would be a good shop to buy this? Thank you.
I believe they are the same part. One superseded the other number.
My book shows it as part #36403 Ammeter, type 2AR (99-1044)
In a search the 36403 relates to a 99-0567. Most of the Triumph suppliers have them for around $50.
..the works thruxton racers of the late 60's used an 8" long piece of wire to bridge the ammeter, which would still show if the circuit was charging but if like your's the ammeter failed, the bike would still finish the race... Hope this helps?Cheers!
A vexed question. The original was cheaply-made, the commonest available now - if they are - will be labelled "Genuine Lucas" but made by Wassell, a quick internet search will show that the vast majority of parts retailers sell the same one.
Because they were and are cheaply-made, many owners prefer to substitute something less-important to the bike running - e.g. a Voltmeter - simply joining the Brown/Blue and Brown/White wires and taping up the connection.
If you simply must have an ammeter, another dodge is to connect a short piece of wire between the ammeter terminals; the meter will then only indicate half the dis/charge (the other half's flowing through the new wire) but, if the meter ever goes completely t1ts-up, the bike won't stop running. :thumb
They're all 'correct' - "99-1044" is Triumph's, the other two are Lucas. Afaict, Lucas used a 'group' code and an individual part number - i.e. lots of ammeters'll be coded "2AR" but "36403" identifies this specific one - you can see the same pattern in headlamp assemblies, lights toggle switches, handlebar switch clusters, etc.
When searching the www, you'd type "triumph 99-1044" and/or "lucas 36403" into your preferred search engine.
Hth.
