Warning Lights - If it's not one thing, it's another!

My original Lucas 7" headlight shell is rusty and the warning light jewels are faded so I bought a new EMCO headlight shell a while back and I recently bought all new Lucas warning lights. The original Lucas warning lights will snap into the EMCO shell, but the new production Lucas warning lights are too loose in the holes (diameter wise) and the new ones don't come with the sealing washers so even if they did snap in, they would flop around. I found that 1.5mm or 1.6mm x 1/2" O-rings will work in the EMCO shell with the original Lucas warning lights, but either is too thick for the new Lucas warning lights, and the new lights won't snap in anyway.

So, what to do? I've thought about trying to lay down a thin ring of RTV and essentially glue them in but other than that, I'm not sure what to do.

I suppose I could buy Lucas headlight shells -- I would have originally had they been available when I bought the EMCO ones, but who knows if their holes are any better for the new Lucas warning lights!

Hi Greg,

The holes and the o.d. of the tubes that are topped by the "jewels" were all nominally 1/2"-dia., so any looseness is likely one numpty pattern parts maker or the other unable to work out that either 12 mm. or 13 mm. isn't 1/2", or Wassell ("Genuine Lucas" :D) not tapering the outside of the "jewel" tubes ... :roll

I suppose I could buy Lucas headlight shells
but who know if their holes are any better for the new Lucas warning lights!
You could try asking dealers if they have "Made In England" shells? According to the recent thread about alternator stators, due to the terms of Wassell's licensing agreement for "Genuine Lucas", stators not made by Wassell can't be called "Lucas" ... :rofl But there are some "Made In England" ... :whistle

Or are there "jewels" not made by Lucas? Last time I needed some, I didn't have any trouble finding them at the local auto-parts store?

Finally, have you considered opening up the holes in the shells to take a grommet, the i.d. of which fits the o.d. of the "jewels"? The "sealing washers" were always separate parts, and you haven't been able to get the original flat ones for years - dealers have been supplying various round-section 'O'-rings - a grommet would be a flat surface for the underside of the "jewel"?

Hth.

Regards,

The idiot lights came with the bike, I'm afraid.
As a PO had attacked the original head lamp shell with a brillo pad or some other abrasive compound, I had to buy a new "genuine" Lucas head lamp shell, as it was cheaper than re-chroming.
The idiot lights were then slightly sloppy, and the grommets cured this problem.

If you look up eagle eye LED lamps on ebay, you will find some nice ones that fit the holes with a locknut to hold them in.I fitted two orange ones as left and right indicator warnings.Very bright so you cannot forget that the indicators are flashing. In fact,at night, they dazzle the rider a bit.I use these eagle eye lamps as brake lights and extra sidelights on two bikes.Lots of colours to choose from.I even used one as a pilot lamp replacement in the headlight.

Warning Lights

Had the same issues with an Emgo shell. I fitted small 'O' rings that slip under the bezels of the warning lights and inside the shell fitted a plastic zip tie to each light, pressed down from the top and tightened the zip tie. They have not popped out as of yet.
