hot engine (one side)

I know this has been brought up before since I looked up some of the old posts.
I cleaned the carbs and jets, inserted new petcocks(the left one was sure messed up with kreme),set the idle ,checked the plugs and points (except timing) and think I have my starting issues resolved. The battery is freshly charged.
The tickler seems more responsive on the right than the left. The float position and tickler spring seem fine on the left.
The engine really gets hot ( pipe turning cherry red ) on the right side.
There doesn't seem to be any air leaks. The plug on the right is harder to insert than the left.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Are you getting a spark on the left? Is the exhaust cool on the left?

The left side gets warm,to about what it should be.Haven't checked for a spark.I'm assuming the cylinder is firing o.k.I do plan to get a timing light this week.
Thanks,Quagmire.

Here's a picture of the exhaust which has gotten pretty dark.
I also hear some knocking now.I'm going to have somebody more experienced check it out before there is further damage.

check the timing if you think fuel aint the problem...separate points eqals seperate strobing...gotta be fuel or spark...swap carbs over if in doubt

Hey there, quagmire.I was wrong about the spark. There isn't any on the left side.I'm sure it's the plug since I get a spark if I switch plugs.Brings me back to my initial post.Could this be causing the right side to run hot?I also noticed the left coil got a little hot when testing for sparks.Anything to worry about there?
Thanks.

The coils should BOTH heat a little equally when running. If static, then the coil which has it's points closed will be the only one to heat.
There are two problems, the left has a spark problem, the right has a heating problem. Overheating is lean mixture, advanced or very retarded spark, or an air leak on the inlet side. Check the balance tube on the inlet adaptors, is it in place and tight?

Just an update.I put new plugs in (the left one was dead),adjusted the contacts, throttle cables and recleaned the jets and synched the carbs the best I could. That seems to have resolved the hot engine problem.
Thanks for all your help.
