A little clutch trouble

Hello
I could use a little advice. I have recently replaced
the clutch inner drum assembly on a 71 bonneville 650. As well
as the cup and springs, pushrod & the gearbox outer cover. The
trouble I am having is now I can not set the clutch to work with the
kickstarter. I read the book and the forum both, still can’t get it set.
The pressure plate will lift when I pull in the handle and the kickstarter
works by the book method, but the bike will not roll free. I have
to really tighten the adjuster screw to get the clutch to work and then the
kickstarter will not work. In any case I know you shouldn’t have to do that.
So any ideas? Thanks

You have reassembled the clutch incorrectly.

Get the shop manual and parts book, disassemble the clutch and start over with the books by your side. As you are disassembling, you'll find the problem.
