Engine Rebuild Advice

My 73 T140 is bleeding from a couple locations; rocker boxes. and counter shaft sprocket. I took the thing half apart to replace the counter shaft sprocket seal i also replaced all seals and gaskets within reach, i even replaced the clutch just to keep things consistant, and it's still leaking gear fluid. i am very mechanically inclined, just newer to old brit bikes.

It had 25,000 miles on the odo when i bought it, and the odo was broke. I'm not sure what to do. It will start first kick, but the oil leak and gear fluid leak has me really annoyed. the chain is flinging dirty crap everywhere because of the random oil and gear oil that gets on it.

Should I just have the thing completely rebuilt by a professional? should i just keep the bike wiped down and fluid levels up?

Maybe I'm more frustrated because i have a new scrambler with no oil on the garage floor underneath it, and i want my bonnie to be more like the scrambler in that respect.

Also why can't I find someone to rebuild the thing for less than $3,000? Is there an affordable rebuild option?

Two things to consider,

1. By countershaft seal, do you mean the one that goes in the back side of the primary cover behind the clutch basket, or do you mean the big one that is held in by a circlip, on the back side of the transmission, sealed by the shoulder on the sprocket?

2. If the transmission seal is leaking, it's either the wrong seal, or maybe your countershaft sprocket shoulder was damaged by a previous chain-offing, and it's cutting up the new seal.

3. Did you re-install the circlip to hold the seal in place?

$3,000 for an overhaul is not bad, as long as it's a total overhaul all the way down to the sludge trap, and all the way back up with new bearings, seals, pistons & rings, valve job & new oil pump & clutch plates. that's pretty much what I charge, but I also include mirror-finish polishing on the engine covers & rockerboxes.

The sprocket seal doesn't have a circlip, but the bearing behind it does. The seal presses into the housing.
Did you fit a large diameter, thin section o-ring between the sprocket and the tab washer?
Are you certain that it's gear oil which is leaking, and not engine oil?
If you replaced all the seals and it still leaks there is a chance that you have a crack in the case, or that the drain plug or detent plunger is leaking....but, since it seems to be picked up by the sprocket, it's probably coming from right in that area.
The price sounds good, but as GPZ says, that's for the whole ball o' wax, parts, machine work, labor, and finish. And a warranty. You might save a little if you did the R and R and cleaned it up nicely before work started.
