According to the 78 Bonneville and Tiger workshop manual section A18 it says to use "grease"! They recommend disconnecting cable from instrument and removing the inner cable. Then clean it in paraffin (Kerosene) and smear it with grease except for the top 6 inches of cable before it goes into the instrument. Make sure the cable is seated into its respective square drive housings before tightening the union nut.....Gary
PS: Also use grease for tach cable! Use oil for throttle, brake and clutch.
I tend to lube the speedo and rev counter cables at about 5 year intervals with just a few drops of light general purpose oil down the outer cable after removing the inner. The bike rarely gets wet so rust is never a problem. In many years,i have not had oil getting into the instrument heads and the key to this is not too much oil near the top as already said.
Brake and clutch cable will be oiled at least once a year using a light oil.Throttle cables just have a little spray oil on the two adjusters in line and a little soaks through to the inner.
Throttle twist grip is lubed with a semi-fluid grease as i have a large can of the stuff.Often used on farm tractor splines
