I've got a tapping sound in the motor, thought it was the tranny, so did the mechanic it took it to. $700 later I still got that sound and the guy says it must be in the sludge trap. He wants to rebuild it for $1500 - $2000. I don't know if I want to trust him again. So, to get the motor on my Bonnie rebuilt this winter is the question. Anyone care to recomend a good trustworthy mechanic in the Western NC area (or within a few hundred miles)?
Thanks!

How can a sludge trap make any noise at all?

Oil starved parts caused by a clogged trap can get very noisy (and expensive) , but I would not trust anybody who, after tearing into my gearbox in pursuit of a phantom tapping sound 7 bills later says "It must be in the sludge trap" that'll be another 2K....

GOOD Triumph mechanics are hard to find these days.

Jon Berglund at Countryside Cycle, Talahassee, FLA. is one of the best on the East coast, as far as I know

Is the primary chain properly adjusted? If it's loose it can certainly cause that type of noise.

Just a thought: Jim

I had a tapping sound, only when I was riding. At first I thought it was a problem with the transmission but found out it was the master link on the drive chain hitting one of the mounting bolt heads. The clearance is soooo close. I turned the link around with the clip on the inside and no more noise.

Is the noise consistant with Rpm? Is it there in neutral? Is it more predominate under accelleration? Is there anything that makes it more noticeable, or less noticable?

Sorry I haven't checked back on my post in awhile.

The sludge trap is not making the noise, the thought is that it caused the problem.
The primary chain was replaced during this exploration to find the tapping sound.
I haven't ridden the bike but a few miles since I heard the sound, but it seems to be a little louder as more throttle is given but not much. The noise is there in neutral. It seems to be consistant, not much change under different conditions.
I suppose I need to find someone to rebuild but I am having no luck in my general area (Western NC).
Thanks for all the feedback!
