1970 T100C Clutch Problem

Hi all from Kiwiland. A Friend has just shown His recently purchased 500 Trophy, very nice with it's high pipes and red/white paintwork. The problem is the clutch adjustment in that the pushrod adjuster screw is hitting the inside of the inspection plug on the chaincase to the point where it has worn a small hole in the plug. Also, upon removal of the plug the pressure plate is only a fraction away from the inside of the casing when the clutch lever is pulled in. The clutch works well with no slippage and is very light (compared to my T140). My first thoughts were that maybe the pushrod is longer than spec and the clutch pack (recently renewed by the PO) was too thick, maybe with the addition of an extra plate???????? At the weekend we will remove the chaincase cover and undertake some measurements, in the meantime have other 500 twin owners struck this problem?

Many thanks in advance

Hi Muzz,

have other 500 twin owners struck this problem?
Ohhh ... yeahhh ... many, many years b.i. (before internet :)).

At the time, the then-girlfiend ran a 350/500 bitsa and, with the help of a friend who had a huge parts stash from doing Triumph restos. for a hobby, I discovered that Triumph had quietly made the primary cover deeper over the years, to the extent that an unused nos '74 was obviously deeper than the '69 one probably original to my T100's engine. The '74 casting is also subtly coned up to the inspection/adjuster hole, although that might be down simply to different castings. My 500 still has that '74 cover, the girlfiend's bitsa (with one less pair of clutch plates) got the '69 cover.

That said, you're right to check things like the pushrod/adjuster and number of clutch plates. You also might find that, if the inspection/adjuster plug has the 'O'-ring seal, fitting one or two of the earlier paper gaskets gets some more space between the adjuster and the plug.

Hth.

Regards,
