I had the alloy barrel of my 54 T100 bead blasted. I neglected to have them protect the mating surfaces. Will this be a problem? They are flat but not smooth. Can they be surfaced with the liner standing proud. Why do the books say no gasket sealer at the cylender base joint? :???: Tim

Hi Tim, light dressing with either fine grade emery paper or wet and dry used on a flat file. Use clear, hi-modulus silicone (SPARINGLY) on the base gasket but NOTING on the head joint.
Roy.

No need to do anything to the surfaces, in fact a little tooth is good for most Brit bikes which use copper gaskets. Modern "klinger" type gasket materials contain microballoons of sealer which break and seal when compressed and heated, so no sealer needed.
