OK, got the oil flowing. Buttoned up the rest of the detail stuff, and am in the process of starting the engine so I can strobe the Boyer and adjust the new Amal.

It'll fire, but won't run for more than a second or so. Where do I go from here?

Thanks, Steve

Any time I have dealt with small engines and run into that problem it was due to lack of fuel. Are you priming the carb with starter fluid prior to starting? The motor is running on that until it is gone and then it dies. Ensure fuel is making it OK to the carb and the carb is misting it correctly. Good luck

Did you just fit the Boyer? If so, did you remember to disconnect the condensers?

I made that mistake once and it drove me nuts until I figured out what the problem was.

Thanks, guys.
I did disconnect the condensers and wire the Boyer per instructions. Checked and doublechecked.
First time I've ever done one, but the instructions seemed simple enough.?

This engine is new and untried to me. I bought it as a complete rebuilt, rocker covers to drainplug.

I installed new carb, Boyer, coils, plugs & wires, fuel and oil lines, etc. and bolted it into a frame and wiring harness that worked great last week with a different engine.

As an update to my last post, I removed the new Amal and bolted on the 'known good' carb off my other engine.

No difference. It'll fire a couple times if I tickle it, but nothing more. I'm not running a choke, but I experimented with a piece of cardboard as a 'choke' to see if it would help. No diff. I'm guessing carb is not the problem....

Static timing looks right (according to the marks), tried a couple different sets of new plugs. Good spark on both cyls.

Valves @ .006 all the way around. Close enough to run, right?

I'm done for today. Any suggestions on where to begin tomorrow? Thanks. Steve

If you have a fat spark and fuel getting through then it sounds like a timing issue. You could try advancing it a few degrees at a time to see if it feels stronger.

The lack of choke should not be a problem, my TR7 did fine with just a tickler.

I seem to recall that with the Boyer I had ( probably a mark one) timing was a compromise. There was no advance/retard curve, the advance was switched either full on or off.

If I set it right for high revs then the timing at idle would be less than perfect.

Pulled the timing cover and aligned the gears to the factory marks. Started 2nd kick!
