just gettin around to reassembling my beloved 71 bonnie...now about those nuts and bolts that hold my exhaust together, i would like to replace with stainless where possible, and already have in most areas , however, im a bit worried about stainless expanding with heat ,moreso than regular steel, causing my exhaust to fly off on the highway, causing a tanker to overturn, with resulting explosions, that would ignite the nearby propane facility, with heat so intense it would trigger more global warming, wich in turn would ruin the stock market and raise gas prices...do ya think i should switch?? .. or am i worrying too much?....tom

yep you are worrying to much ... with the tolerances on these beasties they way they are i do not think the expansion of stainless will cause any issues ... the only thing to watch is they are softer than the stock items and typically have courser threads so be careful cramping them up.

To salve your intense sensitivities, buy 17-4PH stock and make your own.....temper after machining.
No, just buy some fine thread stainless and use a little blue loctite. Or not. I never have had any heat-induced expansion problems with regular old 18-8 SS.

Ahem... funny you should mention...! Yesterday, while out on my usual short loop, one of my mufflers actually fell off! This debacle was witnessed by several of the Harley "tribe" that has descended on our beach town for the annual "Thunder Beach" (should be named "Harley Beach") get-together.
The stainless lock nut that secures the rear foot peg had come un-done.
Still... I love my stainless nuts & bolts... just need to check more often and probably will go to blue Loctite. I am using all fine thread but still, stainless are definitely soft & a bit "greasy".
Best regards,
Dave
