What is correct method to check primary chain tension? I made hook with coat hanger wire and hooked chain. Pushed chain down with screw driver as far as it would go and made mark. Pulled chain up with hook until tight and made mark. Difference between marks is 5/8". Manual says should be 3/8" slack. Chain seems noisy with engine running.

That's possibly a bit too scientific.

Adjust by deflecting the chain with finger pressure through the inspection hole. More or less 3/8". It's going to be noisy no matter what. It's an OLD BIKE. Nothing wrong with that; it's like music to my ears.

Mecchanica will chime in and say you ought to adjust your final drive chain first, so I'll save him a step!
