I'll tell ya, I must have the most perfect Triumph: No, I repeat, NO oil leaks and my factory standard clutch works fine. Yes I put the correct amount of dino oil in the primary, same type that's in the engine.

She always starts on one, two if its cold, kicks.

So what does this tell me, I don't know, I know nothing about these bikes, but from my experience of One, Triumph made excellent bikes back in the day. Maybe I got lucky and when my bike was made everyone at Meridan was in a good mood, but I followed the workshop manual to the letter and no problems so far.

I may be singing a different tune when and if she blows up one day :-D

In the "for what it's worth department", I've used 20W or 10W/30 in my primary since I got the '70 in 1979...still on the original clutch. I do change the engine oil every 1,000 or less (primary a lot longer) and I fitted an oil filter many, many years ago.

So far, so good: Jim

I have a '73 B50 MX where the crankcase and primary oil can co mingle and I have a '67 Bonneville where the two are exclusive. In the '73 B50, I run the same 20w50 dino oil that I run in the OIF tank, in the primary. On the '67 I run 20w50 in the oil tank (usually Spectro Gold) and I use either Spectro or Harley Davidson Primary oil in the primary drive. Never had any problems with either.

Hi Jim, glad to hear from you again. How's the shoulder?

Hopefully I'll see you at the meet this spring.

Hey Quag,

Thanks for asking...the shoulder is coming along great, but I have to get back into my p.t. regime again to build up the strength. I'm just back from 3 weeks in FL (Daytona, Volusia Speedway, Jerry Woods' "hoorah" in Deland and much, much more). Got in plenty of riding down there on the Virago and it felt GREAT!! My wife had orthoscopic surgery done on her knee before we left by the same doctor that did my shoulder....I guess he can order his new Ferrari now!! I've tried your e-mail a few times and it bounces back...try me again with it so we can keep in touch.

Keep in touch, Moto Market has an open house in April, can you make it? Jim

Keep it shiny side up and the rubber on the pavement, Jim.

....and keep it between the trees, as well!!

Thanks Roy, just waiting for the rain to wash the "crud" off the roads up here so I can take the Trophy out for a run. I've already practiced getting it on and off the centerstand, so I'm good to go: Jim

OK...I'm hijacking your thread...

Should the level be at the MIN line or above it...and how far above the MIN should it be? I have a nice steady leak right now that needs fixing and it'll be 2 more weeks before it can be fixed. Right now my oil level is about 1mm above MIN (with a warm engine) and I'm trying to decide whether I should add some oil or let it ride.

If you can stick your index finger in the filler and the oil gets to your first joint or a little higher (about 2.5" of airspace over the oil), you are doing fine. The bike will run fine with a quart in the system, on a cool day and if you don't flog it. The rest of the oil keeps things cool and reduces the oil change interval.
