I've painted my fuel tank 5 times in the last month...
1. Filled tank for first time and it started leaking all over the engine. I fixed the leak and during the Kreem process I trashed the paint job.
2. gas cap gasket bad
3. dropped bike at a stop sign - it was dark, I put my foot down into a one foot pothole. Gas spilt out again.
4. had tank drying on a cardboard box which the wind knocked over. Not only did it ruined the paint job, but now I had a huge dent on both sides of the tank.
5. Riding Sat. morning and I hear a clanking noise. It's not the engine and eventually stops. I get back home and find that the front screw on the tank side emblem came out , so it was banging into the tank and ruining another paint job.
At this point I'm thinking of taking up knitting. :-D

I've painted my Kwak twice in the last month, way behind you..
The first time the clear lacquer reacted with the paint. I had to rub it all down and start again. I've just finished for the second time. This time, so far so good.

Halfords sell a petrol proof lacquer (in a spray can) but at £6.99 for 250ml it aint cheap
I used the plast-kote clear lacquer from their metalflake range. I emailed them to check first, and they assured me it was petrol proof. We shall see...

i'm just using spray paint on mine and then buying this stuff from por-15 called glisten pc , you paint it on with a brush but it doesn't leave brush marks , very shiny clear , in 4 days it hardens as strong as it's getting , which is very very strong , gas won't hurt it , and you could attack the tank with a sledge hammer and it wouldn't chip , or so i'm told . i love all the por-15 products i've tried and this glisten pc stuff is next on my list .

I'm about to re-paint my tank, but dont' want to pay for the costs of paint and labor. My local schools' vocational tech will do it for the cost of paint, and do a pretty good job, but I'm not sure if it's the cheapest, yet most effective for the money way to go. I've also got a big dent in the front, so I'd have to fix that too.
buggy, is the Home Depot stuff a spray paint type, or doyou need a professional get up to use it? How is the quality? Kyle

I have had a lot of good results with POR-15 stuff too, esp. the tank liner. I also find a lot of uses for their factory manifold gray. Glisten is a new one on me, I have not heard of it but it sounds like it might be good on polished alloy.

It's rustoleum gold rush metalic spray cans. It's a great color and I use a finishing pad that makes it glass smooth. ALso, used white electrical tape for the racing strip on the front fender. That worked out great and I clear coated it. I've gotten plenty of compliments at the local biker hangout on the paint job, in between disasters. Luckily the fenders don't have to deal with gas. and have survived my painting adventure. I'm gonna give the por-15 a shot. Thanks to all for the info.

they also have this " color chrome " stuff , for painting chrome different colors , if you had a triumph that wasn't stock and you wanted to match the timing cover or primary to the color of your bike you can do it now and it'll just look like blue chrome , or yellow , red , green , just about any color . por-15 never ceases to amaze me
