There may be someone correcting me as I'm not an expert of this type of thing but I would say the only way to know that would be from the title.

The DU part of the VIN signifies what month and year it was built.

The DU number is the serial number.

You need the "T" stamping (T120, T120R, T120TT, etc.) that sometimes appears ABOVE the DU number, sometimes BEFORE it, and sometimes AFTER it, depending on several variables.

Some "re-stamp" jobs are very hard to detect...

I'm sorry...In 1966 they hadn't gone to the system of using letters for the date of manufacture yet.

Actually they had. The serial numbers for the 1966 unit 650 cc's ranged from DU24875 to DU44393. The "D" serial numbers were from 1960 to 1962 roughly. In the mid 1969 year Triumph switched over to the double letter depending on the month and year of manufacturing.

Like Paul said the serial number won't tell you what type of 650 you have, unless you can research the actual serial number.........Roy?, but you may see a "T" or "TT" or "R" stamped somewhere around the serial number.

Hi Guys, DU 27219 is a T120C. Built October 1965 as a 1966 model and supplied to Tricor, Towson, Baltimore.
it is a TT SPECIAL MODEL. It should be painted Grenadier Red and Alaskan White. Nice bike, I miss mine. Sold it 15 years ago......................
Roy.

DAGAD, if you are right, he's got a lead on a very desireable bike. Hope it's one of those once-in-a-lifetime deals!

Hey Roy, I wanted to thank you for the 1966T120c information, that Greanadier Red is that like an orange, cause thats what the bike has now and the paint looks original. I am paying 5000 is that reasonable, it starts dont smoke and all seems there, the fram, motor numbers match. Again Thanks GILSTAR

By golly, if everything you are saying is true-

1. You got a GREAT deal. REALLY great.

2. DON'T REPAINT IT!!!

3. Take really good care of it, and insist on verifiable credentials from anyone who is proposing to work on the bike, and check 'em out first.

You have a fairly rare bike and you should take care to keep it as original as possible, and well maintained to prevent catastrophic failure of the engine.
