heres the thing. i have a ARD mag. so i got the tympanium voltage regulator. all I'm running off the regulator is the head light, horn and brake lights. i have the bike wired up with no ignition just a toggle switch. i was wondering if i have to run it positive ground still. is the power coming from the alternator positive ground?(if that makes any sense) the instruction say the the regulator can be run either way. it doesn't matter to me. but was just wondering?

DFG,

Firstly - If it aint broke, don't fix it.

The things that are polarity sensitive in the orginal electrics were the zener diode, the rectifier pack, condensers, and in later models the RITA electronic ignition system (also post-production Boyer kits). The alternator is not polarity sensitive in/by itself.

If you've replaced the rectifier and zener with a tympanium and run a magneto ignition system, there's no reason you couldn't rewire to negative earth, as long as you re-wire the tympanium to suit negative ground, and change the battery connections.

It can be done, but you need to be sure you know what your doing, or you'll burn out the loom.

If anyone else is considering changing to -ve earth, please be very careful. If you're running a Boyer, you'll need to rewire the Boyer connections and the coils, as well as replacing the rectifier and zener.

Hope this helps

Go to http://raskcycle.com/online-catalog2006.pdf
pages 137 positive ground, 136 negative ground. This should
give you a very good idea of what to do.

hi dgf,
i don't really understand your problem...i mean...does it matter to have positive or negative ground? triumph are positive ground and it works well..the others are negative ground..and it works well too.!!!do you want to be like the others or what ?we, triumph guys ,are out of the crowd(or we believe so..) even in our electrical system!!!enjoy
BUT..considering i'm a perfect ignorant in electricity all this above is ,maybe, bull...it!!

If I recall, running a positive ground causes the vehicle to attract
particles/stuff from road surfaces. I live in Canada, so some
stuff(salt) can be very corrosive to the automobile, hence negative
ground.

Bruce - I had heard that about "positive ground attraction"; I need to do more research.

When an electric current is passed through a strong solution
of salt in water, electrolysis occurs and the three products,
chlorine, sodium hydroxide and hydrogen are formed. Chlorine,
and Hydrogen react to form Hydrochloric acid, and you know the
rest.
It's best to have a negative(earth) ground(earth) especially
up here in the north.
