i'm a bit confused on what oil to use in primary.. i've been told to use atf . But some people say the oil from the primary mixes with the engine oil. I wouldn't want that. The bike i'm working on is a 1969 tr6r with no modifications. any help would be appreciated...

Triumphs up to and including 1969 have the primary oil separate. The 70 and later, with the big vent tube from the upper rear of the primary inner cover, merge the oil from the engine and the primary together. Your bike can and should use either very light synthetic oil ( like 5 W 20 ) or synth. ATF in the primary.

I just finished putting Royal Purple synthetic ATF in the primary of my 68 Bonneville. I also switched to the RP synthetic gear oil in the gear box. What a difference. The bike shifts better than it ever has and clutch feels really smooth. I highly recommend the change.
