Hey again fellas.
My leg is SORE from kicking on the Thunderbolt all day yesterday. I took the Amal off and made sure it was clean this time. Blew carb cleaner through the pilot circuit and it sprayed out strong through the tiny holes in the carb throat. Put it back together...tickled it a few times...kick...kick...kick...kick...Nothing. I removed the spark plugs and poured some fuel in the spark plug holes. Kick...kick...VROOMMMM....kick...kick...nothing. The plugs are dry. I am still not getting fuel to the cylinders. I can hold down on the tickler and it will run for an instant. What do I need to check now???? I don't think my leg is going to hang in there! I had to pop a cold one to take away the pain.
Surely there is an electric start retrofit out there!!!!!

Thanks for any help...

i don't know what to tell you about the amal, but don't hurt yourself any worse! i hyperextended my knee last spring trying to kick out an ignition wiring problem -- it took ferever to heal.

and your friends think it's HI-larious when you're limping around!

"haw haw haw. hey, pence, how'd you hurt yourself? did you WRECK that old heap? no? you HURT YOURSELF trying to get it STARTED? haw haw haw."

if it's a matter of getting out of the home driveway, give up after 5-10 kicks and hit the cold ones preemptively.

get well soon.

Start with something real simple: open the fuel cap and see if holding the tickler down will give a steady stream of gas. You might have a clogged vent in the cap. Then pull off a fuel line and make sure it's flowing, if the cap trick doesn't do it.

Far out, I know, but simple to check: Jim

buy a new amal, old ones are almost always worn out!!or , better, fit a mikuni and discover what a good carburation can be!(i 'm making friends i know.....)
if you want to stay with amal try to buy a new one with the hard chromed brass throttle valve as they should be more durable.i think surrey cycle makes them(not sure but it exists!!)

You might also want to check for a vapor lock problem. Try starting with the gas cap off. If gas cap has a pin hole in top, run a wire into it. Then I would try kicking it with throttle twisted open. Just some things I've been through. Also check main jet for blockage by removing float bowl and jet. Blow through pin hole in bottom of jet. Good luck.

If the plugs are dry, I would try keeping the throttle closed, not open. Screw in the idle mix screw to lightly bottom and bring it out about 270 degrees.

Annnnnnnnd, check the fuel delivery through the petcocks.
