All the discussion about parts interchanging across the years, and my current projects, have raised a question about engine mount locations and engine stands.

I'm no welder, but if I had a local shop weld up an engine stand that will fit my '66 650 cases, will it fit other engines besides unit 650s? Which ones?

As for now I am using an old engine box (rectangle of 2x6s), but I am going to try to find time to take a welding class. In the meantime I might get extravagant and have one welded up. More likely to do it if it has broader application.

I believe anything from '63 to '70 will be compatible; not sure if the OIF years stayed common in layout, but they are all the same from '71 through the end (I believe).

Thanks guys. I figured the unit 650s engine mount holes were all in the same position, and that 750s were the same. How about the 500s? If they are not the same as the big twin units, are they close enough that making one of the mounts adjustable, or using mounting plates, would make the same stand work for both?

The unit 500 has no outboard rear mounts or front mount, unless you bolt on the two plates. And the bottom center lug stud is smaller. I'd build another of those magic boxes..... cheap and versitile. Use 1 X 8's about 9 1/2 X 12" and it will do a whole bunch of neat jobs. No welding needed.
